Pilates is defined as a system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness. The founder of Pilates, Joseph H Pilates, believed that the “modern” lifestyle, bad posture, and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health. He called his original method Contrology, the art and science of control. Today the more common term for Contrology is Pilates.
